Hunters in Nova Scotia were within their rights when they harvested a rare albino moose last week, but are now under fire after photos of their kill were circulated on social media sites. The animal is considered sacred by the indigenous Mi’kmaq people, who believe albino creatures to be ‘spirit’ animals.

The hunters have since apologized and expressed that they would not have shot the moose had they known that it meant so much. They are now working with the DNR to try to make amends and have fully agreed to delivering the hide for a traditional Mi’kmaq celebration to honor the spirit of the sacred moose.
